Material-media incompatibility comes second. A seal that is chemically attacked swells, hardens, or dissolves. Always verify the elastomer against the full chemical environment, including cleaning agents, which are often overlooked.
Excessive temperature shortens seal life exponentially. Operating beyond the material's rated range causes hardening and cracking; brief temperature spikes in startup or cleaning cycles count too. Select a material rated well beyond your normal operating envelope.
Shaft surface condition matters more than most realize — roughness, scratches, and eccentricity all destroy sealing lips quickly. Finally, contamination from dust and abrasive particles accelerates wear, which is why dust lips and proper lubrication cleanliness are essential.
The common thread is simple: most seal failures are design or handling problems, not product defects. Choosing the right material, installing carefully, and maintaining proper operating conditions will dramatically extend seal service life.
